What does it mean if a designer is an ASID designer?

ASID is a community of people driven by a common love for design and committed to the belief that interior design, as a service to people, is a powerful, multi-faceted profession that can positively change people's lives. Professional members of ASID must pass rigorous acceptance standards: They must have a combination of accredited design education and/or full-time work experience and pass a two-day accreditation examination administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, the Society strives to advance the interior design profession and, in the process, to demonstrate and celebrate the power of design to positively change people's lives.

Its more than 36,000 members engage in a variety of professional programs and activities through a network of 48 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Founded in 1975, the American Society of Interior Designers is the oldest, largest and leading professional organization for interior designers.

ASID inspires and enriches its members by promoting the value of interior design, while providing indispensable knowledge and experiences that build relationships. The Society's 18,000 practicing interior designers work in all areas of both commercial and residential design. ASID Industry Partners include more than 2,700 member firms with some 7,500 individual representatives, uniting the professional designer with manufacturers of design-related products and services.

The Society's membership also includes more than 10,500 students of interior design. ASID has student chapters at colleges, universities and design schools with 2-year and 4-year programs throughout the U.S. and "virtual" chapters through Rhodec International and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online.

Lois Sayers, IIDA, MIA, MFA, holds a Master of Interior Architecture and Design along with a Master of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh.

Lois plans and designs commercial office space and large residential interiors. Approximately seven years ago, while working in the Event’s Department for Atlantic Media in Washington, DC, Lois became interested in commercial design and how functionality of a space can be served by great design.

Since then, she has redesigned interior office spaces (recently redesigning for a local credit union) and law offices. Her niche is reconstructing (and relocating) walled areas to utilize interior space and redesigning interiors to update and modernize the look and function of the space. Lois worked for PPG Industries as their in-house designer while aquiring her MIA, during the summer of 2008. Since then, she has launched her own design firm, Guthrie Fuller Designs, where she remains committed to the belief that sustainability and beauty are closely connected.

Lois’ background is in fiction writing, consulting, designing, event planning and marketing. In her spare time, she writes for the Pittsburgh Lifestyle section of an online magazine, hikes, bikes, skis and writes short stories.
